Jiuhuashan Rolled Stonefly (Leuctra jiuhuashana) is a new insect species discovered in 2025 by Professor Du Yuzhou from Yangzhou University and named after Jiuhuashan. The research findings were published in the academic journal Zootaxa. It marks the second recorded species of the genus Leuctra in China and the first discovery of this genus in East China. The finding proves that the genus harbors undiscovered cryptic species diversity across China. It also breaks the previous understanding that the genus is only distributed in high-altitude mountainous areas of China’s Palearctic realm, revises the known distribution of Leuctra in East Asia, and confirms its wider distribution in the northern part of the Oriental realm. Endemic only to the clear and unpolluted streams of Jiuhuashan, Leuctra jiuhuashana is highly sensitive to water quality and serves as a natural water quality indicator.
